What a week!

Let's start with Friday night where I hydroplaned my way to see Kim Gordon at the Ventura Music Hall. Despite all the fun I had driving to and from the venue during the Easter downpour avoiding these top-notch west coast road warriors trying to become friends by sliding into my vehicle on the 101 I survived. It was worth it, Kim Gordon absolutely destroyed playing her whole album cover to cover with a twist, she played the same song twice! That song being "BYE BYE". The only other time I have seen that was at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia on the Gorrilaz's first tour where they played "Clint Eastwood" twice. I was on a LOT of mushrooms and this was the late 90s but I know that happened.

Saturday I wanted to avoid the reverse Mad Max Fury Road with "rain" drive style so I found a pocket of calm within the storm and took off with science on my side. Sometimes I feel like a genius and this was one of those rare moments. I was spending the night at a friend's apt, a friend that was camping at Joshua Tree, and ended up cutting his trip short because he was CAMPING IN THIS WEATHER. Before the show I went to Holbox a few blocks away from the Shrine for Iftar and Subhan Allah it was amazing.

https://www.holboxla.com/#/

I was lucky enough to thank the chef who knew who I was! That's because I emailed and called to find out when I should be there to eat by sunset. Their restaurant is in a food court setting, which I love, and everything was on time including myself. I recommend all the tacos and the ceviche cause I ate all the tacos and the ceviche. Octopus Taco was my favorite. Everyone that worked there was fantastic. After my amazing meal, I returned to the Shrine to experience Mitski. It blew me away.

Every time I see her she gets more Bowie. Her latest record "The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We" is her official cowboy record, with heavy country landscapes dominating the sound. What she did live was breathtaking. She performed all her new music the way it sounds on the record BUT all her older material (and I mean every song she performed that is not this latest record) was done hyper differntly. For example, she played my favorite song, "I Don't Smoke", but did an almost unrecognizable version of the song that sounded something you would hear on a casino boat during Mark Twain's America. This is why I love going to see a show live. AND I SAW KIM GORDON THE NIGHT BEFORE. I did make one horrible mistake and that was to park in the Shrine parking structure. I was stuck on the 3rd floor for about 75 minutes but it was worth the post-show time tax.

So my friend who turned back around surprised me and got me takeout Pho from the spot so I could load up and eat before sunrise. Get you a friend like Joe, King Piccolo knows my life is way better with him and his wife in it.

Easter Sunday I arose and headed back to Santa Barbara to do New Noize.

Song of the Week goes to Crumb with "Amama" This song made my heart jump back 40 years. It's a Muslim girl's name and the motifs that were painted reminded me of running around NJ in the 8os with all my Khalas hanging. I think the holy months is making me "feel" human emotions.

Do I even need to mention that Beyoncé gets Album of the Week with "COWBOY CARTER"?  This record is truly incredible and it's nice to see a mainstream artist attack a genre of music that has traditionally has been closed off to anything but white artists. Yeah, I said it. Don't believe me, talk to Hootie aka Darius Rucker. Yes, I know Hottie and the Blowfish is the name of the band and there is no "Hootie" so don't @ me. I do feel a little bad for all the artists/bands that released albums this past Friday as there were some real gems by Chicano Batman, gglum The High Llamas & Chastity Belt.

Shout out to Ramy.

I haven't seen King Kong X Godzilla movie yet (I know who am I?!?!?!?) but I was told that it was Kong heavy plus my social calendar is full but I will see my Kaiju soon. And I'll see you soon.

Last week I took off New Noize cause I got a year older and Ramadan started up. I'm back so let's get into it.

I'm still processing Akira Toriyama death and in doing so this set is dedicated to one of the greatest humans of our generations. As you can see the first track is the opening theme for Dragonball Z "Cha La Head Cha La"

Since I took off last week I had to combine 2 weeks' worth of new music and whenever that happens massive cuts to the set is inevitable. If you follow me on Instagram you will see that I had something like 90+ minutes to kill.

Album of the Week was written in stone when this artist first announced her new record "The Collective" last year. I'm talking about Kim Gordon. What a record! There has been a lot of talk about her age & when you listen to this record you will understand why as it is so youthful. To all the Sonic Youth fans this is still pure Kim Gordon but has these modern elements that propel this record into something you must listen to. This album is like a kitbashed Gundam where you know what it is but are amazed on how it has been constructed. I can't remember the last time I played a vinyl on repeat but here I am spinning this on wax and streaming this any chance I get. On top of that she is playing in Ventura at the end of the month so hype levels are over 9000.

I'd like to make a quick nod for some incredible records that came out and are worth your time. SAICOBAB album NRTYA on Thrill Jockey is bonkers in all the right ways. Four Tet's new record Three is on as I type this. Oh and don't sleep on World Wide Whack by Tierra Whack.

I went with Metronomy's new single "Nice Town" featuring Pan Amsterdam because we all need a bit of joy in our lives and this track gives just that.

In other news, I saw Dune 2 and loved it. I do have issues with Dune 2 but if I discuss these issues I will spoil the movie and I don't spoil things without clear warnings.  You were robbed of some impact if they kept all the "vocabulary" of the books/previous film. I have come to terms with the fact that reflections of "me" is not something Hollywood wants but they want all the things that represent "me". Yasin Bey aka Mos Def said it best on the Black Starr song "Definition" ‘Manhattan keep on makin' it, Brooklyn keep on takin'it.’ It is what it is.

SIDE NOTE I know that Mos Def line is a reference to "The Bridge Is Over" where KRS ONE says "Manhattan keeps on making it, Brooklyn keeps on taking it. Bronx keeps creating it and Queens keeps on faking it ..." I just don't like this version cause I love me some Queens. Jackson Heights for life.

Catch you next time on Dragon Ball I mean New Noize.

There was no official day off or anything yesterday, just overwhelmed with life lately but it was manageable. Anyhow Tuesdays are the new Mondays, right?

I saw HEALTH this past Saturday at the Ventura Hall. I am ashamed to say this but this was my first time at this venue since its remodel. The last show I saw at this spot back when it was still a hybrid bowling alley/music venue was Russian Circles. That was kick ass and so was HEALTH. It was HEALTH's first show on their 2024 tour and I knew it was special when they walked out to Neon Genisis Evangelion's opening theme song "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" The set list was surprisingly vast jumping from record to record with great ease. They opened with CRACK METAL and jumped to their OG cut zoothorns, which for me is a cheeky nod to their fans knowing these are the 2 biggest singles from these bookended records. The set was very metal and I wanted to buy all the merch but the 1st of the month was on a Friday.

Sunday means New Noize and hopefully I didn't disappoint.

New Noize song of the week is St. Vincent's "Broken Man" I can not wait to see the concept behind this record and future singles to come.

Mannequin Pussy's newest album is also the New Noize Album of the Week. Simply put I love "I Got Heaven" but to be honest I don't feel I can fully articulate how much I love this record as Kristen Stewart did recently so here is that:

and I agree Kristen. Can I call you Kristen?

Bonus you should check Sheherazaad new EP QASR. She is a fellow Pakistani and this EP is the perfect companion for any Desi entering Ramadan. No worries the EP is made for all and encourage all of you to take the time and spend less then an hour with this audio art piece.

No show this coming Sunday due to Ramadan. To all participating in the holy month stay strong! It gets harder and harder every year but at least it is not summertime. If you know a Muslim practicing Ramadan have a bit of extra patience when dealing with them.

New Noize will be back on the 17th.

Aye yo and hi everyone. It’s back to being sunny here in SoCal so fingers crossed this type of weather lasts until November.

I did the Reggae Soundclash before my New Noize set so it was a long Sunday full of radio specialty goodness.

The New Noize Song of the Week was another difficult pick but for this go around I am selecting “Mahal” by Glass Beams. Watch out for Glass Beams as 2024 is the year everyone will be saying they heard of them 4 years ago which is not true as their debut EP came out in 2021.

The New Noize Album of the Week is “Untame the Tiger” by Mary Timony. Other critics have written way better write-ups about this phenomenal record than anything I would add would be subpar but needless to say there is a reason why there is so much buzz around this record.

And lastly, for real who is ready for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?
