The first New Noize of 2025 is officially in the books, and it feels amazing to be back. There’s something undeniably exciting about January. Sure, it’s freezing out, but it’s also the season of fresh projects, bold announcements, and me getting to shine a light on what deserves to be heard.  I am highly aware how big my spotlight is and hopefully this is the year it widens. Or not all I can do is what I do.

New Noize Song of the Week was a tough call (as always), but I went with a little bias: "Orlando in Love" by Japanese Breakfast. I’m beyond hyped for the new album, and she’s hitting the Santa Barbara Bowl in August. Will she invite me backstage for drinks and high fives before her set? DOMAIN EXPANSION -manifestation-  

New Noize Album of the Week is something I’ve been eagerly waiting for, and it absolutely delivers. zzzahara dropped "Spiral Your Way Out" this past Friday, and it’s been on blast everywhere I can find speakers.  The record has this fun finish to it, it has its melancholy  moments but has the hopeful feeling topped with so much LA style. Highly recommend to that friend that it is too cool to admit you put them onto something.  

Funny enough, both my picks this week are from LA-based artists. Total coincidence, but before I sign off, I need to address what's happening in LA right now.  

SoCal is hurting from the wildfires—devastation that’s spreading in more ways than one. If you want to help, please donate directly to verified GoFundMe campaigns. You can spend your money however you want, but be wary of big nonprofits or organizations.

And if you’re not from here? Don’t say shit. The amount of ignorant nonsense I’ve heard is incredible. My personal favorite gem: “Why aren’t they using the ocean to put out the fires?” First off, they are using seawater in some cases, but here’s the kicker: many fire zones aren’t near places where that’s even possible. Add in wind conditions that make any flight a nightmare, and oh, let’s not forget—you want to dump saltwater on mountains? You ever hear of “salting the earth”?  People are wild.

WE DID IT! Another year of music in the books, and what a New Noize it’s been. Doing this show is one of the greatest joys of my life—even when it’s a little chaotic (read: stressful). The special only gave me 3 hours to work with, so yeah, some tough cuts had to be made. But in the end, I Got Heaven by Mannequin Pussy. Album of the Year. CONGRATS!

2024 was a banner year for music. I could sit here and wax poetic about all the dopeness, but that’s not what New Noize does. We’re always looking forward. So here’s to 2025 and whatever it’s about to bring.

Before I sign off, let me say this: I’m forever grateful. To everyone who tuned into the show, followed the New Noize Weekly playlist, or read these write-ups—thank you. Huge thanks to the artists, bands, DJs, tour managers, promo teams, and A&Rs who got me into shows, festivals, and all the wild live events this year. And of course, my parents—the best humans I know. You’ve always supported my ridiculousness, and I won the ultimate lottery when Allah blessed me with you.

IT'S THE LAST NEW NOIZE OF THE YEAR. What a year 2024 has been for music. I don’t care what anyone says—this was a banner year. We’ll circle back to all that soon enough.

This past show marked the final New Noize of 2024, and let me tell you, we finished STRONG. It never fails to amaze me how many new records and songs drop this late in the year. Am I complaining? Hell no. I’m complimenting.

The New Noize Album of the Week goes Missionary with Snoop Dogg’s new album. Every track was produced by Dr. Dre, and you can hear it. Sure, there are some of those cliche callbacks to Snoop’s earlier tracks—but somehow, they hit different here. They’re not the usual cringe-fest you get when other MCs try to pull that off. If you’re into that G-Funk sound, trust me, missionary won’t disappoint.

New Noize song of the week goes to the Bonobo rework of Reason by Kanako Yamamoto.

Now, here’s what’s next:

  • Next Sunday: New Noize Holiday Special, featuring a mix of festive winter jams from 2024 and some throwbacks from past holiday episodes.
