Slipping into the slip of Roctober and this guy is feeling great about this onslaught of new jams. Usually around this time new music releases start to slow down but not in 2021 & I for one am not mad at this fact. This past Sunday's set was no exception seeing some surprising new releases. The one that has got me HYPED is Mistki! Last we heard from her she finished up her tour and decided to take a much needed break. Mitski is back with her new single "Working for the Knife" and that means a full lenght BUT WHEN Mitski, when? In that same hour I immediately played Sasami covering one of my favorite songs by the late & great Daniel Johnston "Sorry Entertainer" and what a cover, its Metal AF and Sasami shredding style melts my face in all the right places. In hour 1 a spun the 2nd Arca single featuring Sia "Born Yesterday" and so pop in all the right ways. Arca is also doing a campaign with Ray-Ban sunglasses & im loving all this alt content. I also played new singles from Bonobo, White Lies and Porches but the single that took the "Best of New Noize Song of the Week" is Cat Powers cover of Frank Ocean's "Bad Religion" Much like Sasami, Cat Power's cover of Bad Religion sounds nothing like the original but still has this gravitos that Cat Power commands. One of the last shows I saw before the Pandemic was Cat Power at the Lobero and it was her best performance to date.

Let's talk about full lenght drops. James Blake's new records dropped and a lot of people seem to like it. A few others worth notting are Hand Habits "Clean Air" Bummer's "Dark Horse" & Lala Lala's "I Want the Door To Open" The New Noize Album of the Week belongs to Helvetia "Presents Sudden Hex" out on Joyful Noise. This album is short, under 30 minutes short, but unholy satan this album packs a punch. "Presents Sudden Hex" is on brand for the month of Rocktober and should be incorporate in your daily listening rotation.

Don't worry I will be back next week with another New Noize drop.

Yes this update is coming in on a Tuesday but in my defense I was floored as my body decided to shut down and be all sick (NOT COVID). No worries I am feeling much better but still a bit meh. I blame the Santa Barbara weather. It went from being like 50 to 80 to stormy AF last night (seriously only people from California would take pictures of rain & lightning). If I wanted these types of weather fluxes in my life I would not have left NJ, but who cares about the weather you are here for New Noize.

This past Sunday was a total vibe. I mostly hit all things rock in hour 1 and transitioned into some electronic vibes in hour 2 with a sprinkle of randomness throughout the whole 2 hour show. Picking my "best ofs" was a problem though.

The best song played on New Noize is always a delmemina for me but was compounded this week with all these amazing tracks. I love the new Deerhoof, Overmono, Penelope Isles & ATARASHII GAKKO! but for me I have to go with my favorite mutant girl (her words not mine) ARCA. I love everything this force of nature puts out and "Incendio" is something her fans have been waiting for. New album is coming out this week and this single has teased me to the point of trying not to burst before this release.

Album of the week was also massively difficult to choose. I am a HUGE POND fan and "9" definitely demands some of your time but if i had to pick 1 album I must go with Gustaf's new record "Audio Drag for Ego Slobs' '. It just hits and has been in perma-repeat since its initial listen.

AND SO MUCH MEDIA here in Rocktober. Everyone has finally joined the death game bandwagon known as Squid Games but so much more. I haven't seen the new Venom but I am hyped for it. The biggest news is that it is time for fall anime 2021. Why the hype?? Billie Ellish caused a stir in the anime community by rocking an Attack on Titan long sleeve with a very VERY deep cut message that only fans of the anime would know. Does she actually like AoT or is she a normal that just wants to jump the hype train? Who knows but if more people watch Attack on Titan (one of the greatest TV shows of all time) then I am here for it.

And I'll be here next Sunday.

i feel a disturbance---

As we patiently await Roctober to be upon us later this week let us look back in great reverence to last week's epic tour. Wednesday I went up north 2+ hours to see Spoon followed by one of the best performances of 2021 St Vincent. Anne, you take my breath away everytime we meet & your shredding ways make my soul melt. Then, the next day My Morning Jacket played a blaring set that almost hit the 2 hour mark at the SSBowl. They played a lot of hits, and they also shredded my face off with sweet guitar licks. Oh then on Friday it was back to the SBBowl for H.E.R. who despite only playing 50 minutes, was an incredible force and she too shredded with H.E.R. signature ultra dope swagness. Needless to say Saturday I hibernated.

---i am no jedi---

Sunday brought another installment of New Noize and I kicked things off with another highly anticipated release from Japanese Breakfast, she did the original soundtrack to the videogame Sable. This is truly the year of Michelle Zauner and what a soundtrack. Also shout out to the people that got this soundtrack to me.

This weeks Album of the Week belongs to Film School "We Weren't Here"

King Hannah came in very relaxed with the New Noize song of the week, "A Well-Made Woman" on City Slang.

Lastly, I really want to highlight an amazing piece of media. As anime becomes more and more common we are finally starting to see this incredible style used in our favorite slice of us. Star Wars Visions is out on Disney Plus and if you weren't a believer in anime you will be, you will be. Each episode plays as a short, altering story lines, creating new versions of your favorite characters and exploring other aspects of a Galaxy far far away. The 3rd episode (tatooine rhapsody) is all about the music industry, a ragtag group of beings trying to make ends meet and become the biggest band this side of the 2 sunned planet of Tatooine. Turns out the bassist is wanted by Jaba and Boba shows up to a torn up mostly empty venue to capture this alien for execution. The lead singer, a child, must look inside himself to not only save his band, but save his friend from execution. What unfolds is such a romantic version of the force, the kid converts a lightsaber into a mic and uses his jedi superior intellect to not only to save his hommie, but get his band signed to Jaba himself. The force truly can be yielded in a most poetic way.

---may the force be with you

see you next Sunday.

We back BAABBBYYYYY. It feels good to be outside watching shows again AND before I get into it YES I realize its Tuesday and I usually do this update on a Monday but I have a semi-serious affliction, I am lazy as hell.

As I was saying Thursday I headed to see the Rostam open for HAIM at the SBBowl. I was gonna leave early but was convinced to stay for a few more songs during HAIM's set and I'm glad I did as THUNDERCAT came out and jammed with the ladies on "3 AM". Then on Sunday I did leave Gary Clark Jr (also at the SBBowl) early to do New Noize but was able to catch the 1st song. I did get there hella early to see Allen Stone do his damn thing and he did with all the funk and grace of a newly released caged bird. It was a great night.

This concert wagon is not stopping. I am seeing St Vincent tomorrow evening at Vina Robles. It will be the 1st time going to this venue and I have only heard good things. If that wasn't enough SPOON is opening! Thursday I am hopefully seeing My Morning Jacket and come Friday H.E.R. both shows are at the SSBowl. I am especially excited to see H.E.R. as this will be my first time seeing H.E.R. live.

New Noize’s Album of the Week belongs to Mild High Club "Going Going Gone". This Stones Throw release is perfect for an over casted morning or a long evening drive.

Snail Mail's "Valentine" just came out on Matador records and it got me feeling all sorts of feelings but mostly anticipation for this full length to come out.

Only a few more New Noize shows left for this year, next Sunday is in my sights.

BEFORE I sign off here a special shout out to Joel Corelitz the man behind the music for Eastward, an incredible indie game made by only a handful of people and released by Chucklefish. I contacted Mr. Corelitz on bandcamp and he was gracious enough to send me the OST and it bangs HARD. Every time I reach out to a composer from a Chucklefish release they always hit me back, I played a few tracks off of Wargroove when it released way back when and had the same experience. Video game music MUST be heard and I am here to play it.
