I took a random Sunday of last week cause I was feeling kinda burnt and truth be told I still do but I still showed up to do New Noize last night.

Talking last night here in Santa Barbara apparently, we have claimed Josh Tillman aka Father John Misty as one of our own. This LA native has made the smart decision to settle in SB when he's not troubadouring around the globe. I did not attend last night's show and this breaks my streak of seeing him play shows as a solo artist in our beach community. I got a ton of text messages asking where I was as well as to many pictures of random white dudes in brimmed hats.

Whilst everyone was galivanting at the Santa Barbara Bowl I dropped another New Noize set.

I did a little movie block at the beginning of the show which included the new TMNT soundtrack (done by Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross), Oppenheimer, Barbie & anime OP (Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2) by Tatsuya Kitani. Later in the set we hit back-to-back colab goodness via Danger Mouse & Jemini followed by Turnstile & BADBADNOTGOOD. In fact, Turnstile & BADBADNOTGOOD got the New Noize Album (technically EP) of the Week with New Heart Designs. WE NEED THIS TO BE A FULL BLOWN ALBUM, just saying.

I started hour 2 with the New Noize Song of the Week "Before" by Blonde Redhead. Still mad I missed them playing a show in LA a few weeks back, especially after hearing this new single. Really excited for this new record.

In personal news I beat Final Fantasy XVI last night and what a game. This will go down as one of the most controversial FF cause of the combat as it's a total action game that dictates a lot of RPG elements that make Final Fantasy a Final Fantasy game. The biggest is turned-based combat, which there is none of. Gaining accessories and new weapons was pretty lackluster and didn't have much weight when achieving whatever reward. Also, there is really no open world to explore, it leaned to the linear format more than any of its recent predecessors, which isn't a bad thing but it is a thing. Regardless of these few gripes I had this was an incredible game!

This story of brothers and brotherhood is one of my favorites of all FF games and brought me tears more than once causing me to actively call my younger brothers (who both ignored my phone calls) with a much more mature tone than previous entries. Graphically one of the best games on the PS5 platform and if that wasn't enough the music and voice acting will win awards. Though I wasn't prepared for the action-based combat I can say that it was massively fun and the systems put in place were some of the best I have played. It was responsive and felt great completing combo strings for massive damage. With that said I still prefer the FFVII remake combat system. Contorling just one character in a FF game feels wrong.

I like video games.

I like you.

See you next time.

This past Friday I watched Fifth Element at the courthouse here in Santa Barbara for its Movies in the Park series and this year's theme is Sci-Fi. There is nothing like being outside watching a movie with your community. It's why summer rules. Talking about ruling I did it again with another banger New Noize session.

This week's New Noize Song of the Week goes to the Kills talking about the city in which I spent many a summer night as a youth "New York" At this point the Kills need to stop teasing us and release this record.

To be clear I don't want to take away the other summer single sizzlers from this past Sunday session. Lol Tolhurst & Budgie & Jacknife plus a feature from LCD's  James Murphy drop another city-related ditty "Los Angeles". Cayucas released another fun summer surfer jam called "Waffles" and it's perfect if you own a beach cruiser and carry your longboard as you pedal towards the ocean to catch some salty waves.

Jessy Lanza's latest LP "Love Hallucination" came out this past Friday on Hyperdub and just so happens to be the New Noize Album of the Week. Its a great romp around her audio landscape and if you have friends that only listen to electronic music like I have friends that only listen to electronic music this will provide that same vibe but will not be as generic as all those other bleep bloop music they are constantly pumping at their pretentious pool parties.

Next week we Fiesta here in Santa Barbara, so no New Noize this coming Sunday. No worries I'll be back eventually...If I survive.

Did I see Oppenheimer this weekend? Yes, and I can say with complete confidence that it is in my top 3 best movies of 2023 so far. The music and sound in this film is what going to the movies is all about. I'm also all about that new music.

As the summer heats up so do all these mid-year singles that are prepping us for some fall/winter full-length releases. Capra's new single "Tied Up" rips all other metal apart, Viji is a whole vibe and so is her new single "Sedative". Taling vibes I personally love anything beabadoobee drops and "the way things go" is no exception. This week's New Noize Song of the Week belongs to Big Thief with "Vampire Empire". This song is so good it makes me mad that I have to wait for this LP to release. If every song is on pace with this recent single then this forthcoming record will be of the best 2023 has to offer.

Album of the Week was hard to pick and to be honest, I went totally left field with my selection. I did want to mention some killer records that came out including Night Beats with "Rajan", Black Milk's "Everybody Good?" and Guided By Voices with "Welshpool Frillies". This week I went with an EP cause it's that good. K Pop is my favorite commercial pop and NewJeans has taken over that whole scene. They just released the "Get Up" EP which clocks just over 12 minutes (or half a Strokes record) and every song is TikTok rocket fuel. Maybe it's all this sunshine that's got me craving pop music and NewJeans is defiantly the fix.

Stay cool my people and I'll catch you next time.

Let there be HEAT! Santa Barbara has been nothing but sunny and hot and I for one am loving it. Talking about heat checkout the latest installment of New Noize.

Song of the Week belongs to The Sextones with "Beck and Call" Talk about a vibe, it's the perfect summertime slow jam. This track reminds me of 11:26 PM, it's a warm 72 degrees with top-down and you are with that special someone cruising.

The New Noize Album of the Week goes to Snooper with "Super Snooper". Great things come in small tight packaging sometimes and Snooper embodies this. Clocking under 23 minutes "Super Snooper" hits you with 14 solid tracks that will cause you to upshift. ***SIDENOTE, I don't know where all these car metaphors are coming from, Mondays... Fun riffs, fast cuts, aggressively ridiculous lyrics and so much more will have you grinning throughout this cover-to-cover listen. I played "Powerball" cause as of doing this write up the Powerball jackpot is 900 million.

Lastly, new seasons of anime for summer 2023 have started and holy hell there are some bangers. 1 show I want to mention is Zom 100 AND IT IS FANTASTIC. The basic premise is an overworked shut-in is in a deep depression hole as his job has pushed him to the extremes of fatigue. Then, zombies and this is where the show shines. Instead of fear, there is PURE JOY as the protagonist quickly realizes he never has to go back to work again. There are only 2 episodes of Zom 100 as of writing this write up and this show is resetting the bar. So much so that before the anime season is over Netflix is releasing a Zom 100 live-action movie in, wait for it, AUGUST! If you know anything about live-action anime it will probably be astronomically terrible so watch the anime. The best part is you don't need Crunchyroll to watch it, you can check out Zom 100 on Hulu as well. Here is the trailer.

Catch you cats next Sunday.
