As the sky gathers in darkness in the middle of the afternoon as this impending storm nears we reflect on last nights New Noize set.

You might’ve noticed the playlist was a bit smaller this week. You’re not wrong. My guy Logan stopped by the studio to talk all things Fields of Funk, we gave away some tickets, and I spun a block of artists from the lineup including the brand new Fcukers “I Like It Like That,” which also happens to be this week’s New Noize Jam of the Week.

Talking all things funky the New Noize Album of the Week goes to Harvey Sutherland's "Debt". At no point whilst groovin to this record was like "I have to turn this down", quite the opposite. This needs to be cranked at your next pre halloween monster mashes.

A few other stand outs to check if you are limited on audio intake time would be the new Rober Glasper album. A full-blown sonic journey that had me circling back all weekend. The Thundercat collab alone is worth it.

Oh and I can't leave out the new Jay Som album "Belong". I LOVE THIS RECORD, especially the second half. Jay Som explores musical vistas they have not been to and slides back into their sound with what they learn midway through record which stuck with me. I can’t stress this enough, the back half of that record hit me square in the chest. It’s emotional, expansive, and everything I love about watching an artist expand in real time.

No New Noize next Sunday but will back the following.

Laters...

As we ease into fall, I’m craving flannels but this is SoCal, so I’ve still got a few weeks before that hits. What I do have in spades is new music you should checkout.

This week’s set was stacked with surprises. Two killer covers: Wisp’s dreamy take on Coldplay’s “Yellow” and Cheekface’s tongue-in-cheek spin on “Sucked Out” by Superdrag. I also revisited the Hades II soundtrack (and yes, I finally beat Chronos on night 33). Then out of nowhere, I got my hands on a massive drop—over 100+ tracks from the Halloween soundtrack archives, arranged by John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter, and Daniel Davies. Expect more thrasher selections this month, because Halloween.

Now, let’s talk Song of the Week, Dry Cleaning is back! “Hit My Head All Day” is everything I love about them—still clever and deadpan, but with new layers and dynamic shifts that hit differently. It’s confident, mature, and totally replayable.

For Album of the Week, The Phenomenal Handclap Band came through with "We Are Worlds Away" a 35 minute groove that feels tailor made for the late night drive home after a show. It’s funky, free, and impossible to sit still through.

Until next week...

September got real AF New Noizers. My PMA is still high but the industry gut punched me back into reality. Cryptic updates will continue because in radio, egos are delicate, and I know my way around one (or twenty).

This past Friday was an avalanche of new releases: legends like Neko Case and Jeff Tweedy dropped heavy hitters, while John Maus blessed us with gothy goodness on "Later Than You Think". Even Polyvinyl, not exactly known for hip-hop releases, came out with Plato III, which isn’t a straight hip-hop record, but then again, what even is hip-hop? I’m not touching that debate, but I will say "Grown" is worth your time.

Stones Throw got hyper indie with Automatic’s "Is It Now?", while Doja Cat time-traveled into the 80s on Vie (and she’s rapping more than ever). Meanwhile, Purity Ring’s new self-titled LP apparently pulls inspiration from Nier Automata and Final Fantasy X, which is basically a cheat code for my ears. And if you’re craving that ‘90s alt-garage vibe, Geese came correct with a flannel ready record.

But the crown this week goes to Moon Panda’s "Dumb Luck". I’ve been waiting all year for this one, and it doesn’t disappoint. It’s a record you immediately restart the second it ends. Subtle lo-fi joy woven through hip swaying grooves. Not boring, not background just pure vibes.

New Noise song of the week? Easy: aron!“deja vu”. Maybe it’s the overcast SB skies, maybe it’s job-app rejection emails piling up, maybe it’s Yankees playoff stress, but this song hits.

And speaking of hits, shout out to Darren Korb and the Hades II OST. When the first Hades dropped in 2020, it ate my life. My most played Switch game outside of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. With Hades II, Darren and his crew came through again with 52 tracks that don’t just soundtrack the Underworld, they transport you there. The deluxe edition even bundles the OST, worth it.

No wild concert story this week (I know, shocking). But that drought ends tonight with Mac DeMarco at the SBBowl. Moving forward hopefully the concert gods will grant me there favor under the October moonlight.

Getting closer to Rocktober but looking at last nights set if feels like it came early. Welcome to another New Noize.

Nine Inch Nails just dropped the soundtrack for the upcoming Tron: Ares movie and it’s AMAZING. Trent and Atticus put that Oscar-winning sauce all over it, and now the only problem is waiting for the movie to actually drop. Did I see NIN this past weekend? Nope. My FOMO was set to HIGH.

Another soundtrack that is a must check is "HIM" I was surprised how much i was drawn to it the deeper I went.

The Album of the Week goes to Wednesday with "Bleeds" Who knew this was going to be one fo the best records of 2025? I like them but Bleeds is a whole new beast. At one point there is feedback with violin strings, this is what the United States needs right now.

Oh did you have the Avett Brothers doing a collab record with Mike Patton on your 2025 bingo card? Neither did I and it works!

The New Noize Song of the Week is no surprise for fans of NN, Thundercat is BACK BABY! He has been fairly active whilest on "album hiatus" popping up on other artists project but now he's back and we are all highly anticipating this next Brainfeeder drop.

Still working on finding work. Did I get Paul McCartny tickets for the SBBowl this Friday. That's Bison laugh levels hilarious BUT I will be grinding on Hades II on the switch so theres that.

See you next week.
