What timeline am I living in? Secured a Switch 2 on Thursday. Eid was Friday. Beat the Paintress on Saturday (finally). Took an L in lawn bowling on Sunday. ICE protests in LA. Feds are taking it too far. And in the middle of it all—New Noize.

This week’s set is a little more low-key, and that’s not a bad thing. Plenty of big-name releases dropped—stuff I will get to later—but I wanted to shine a light on some artists who often get left out of the Spotify algorithm conversations. There’s so much music getting released every week, and honestly? Most of the best stuff still flies under the radar

Album of the Week goes to  "Ripped and Torn" by Lifeguard. I’ve been waiting on this one like it’s a sneaker drop. And yeah—it’s a personal pick. Lifeguard just makes my kind of music. No other way to say it. Raw, urgent, driving—but not aimless. Ripped and Torn is exactly what I wanted it to be. Shoutout to Matador for keeping the distortion distorted.

Song of the week goes to Cate Le Bon "Heaven Is No Feeling" out on Mexican Summer records. This is the most “pop” Cate’s ever sounded—and I mean that in the best way possible. There’s still her signature surrealism in the songwriting, but the track’s structure and delivery feel way more inviting. It sounds like a radio single without sacrificing the weird. She’s always been incredible and more people need to be on Cate.

I need a nap.

Sometimes you're up. Sometimes you're down.
And if you’re a Knicks fan... you already know. This week’s been brutal. And honestly, if there’s any solace, it’s this: no one’s watching these NBA Finals. I’d put money on this being the lowest-rated Finals in recent memory. But you’re not here for hoop eulogies.

Let’s talk albums.
Way too many dropped this week—and as much as I wanted to dive into all of them, I could only get to a few. That said, these records deserve your ears:

  • The Budos Band – VII

  • Ty Segall – Possession

  • Miynt – Rain Money Dogs

  • Lionmilk – WHEN THE FLOWERS BLOOM

  • Foxwarren – 2

  • yeule – Evangelic Girl is a Gun

  • Aesop Rock – Black Hole Superette

  • Rome Streetz x Conductor Williams – Trainspotting

  • MRCY – Volume 2

  • Obongjayar – Paradise Now

  • Garbage – Let All That We Imagine Be The Light

  • Miley Cyrus – Something Beautiful

  • Matt Berninger – Get Sunk

Every one of those is doing something interesting but there can only be 1 album of the week and that belongs to the Swans with Birthing. Look—I’m not gonna pretend I’m objective here. I love this band. Always have. Birthing is Swans in full form: crawling, building, testing your patience, then rewarding it in ways only they can. Their live show is still the best part of the whole experience—but Birthing is the weight you carry until you can hear it at full volume in a blacked-out room with your ribcage vibrating. People call Swans an “acquired taste.” Those people are wrong. Good music is good music. And Swans make great music.

Wet Leg is back with "CPR"  , a clean, cheeky, deceptively perfect single. And yeah, word is a new record is coming… but I’m not holding my breath. If Nintendo taught us anything, it’s that the more you want it, the longer it takes. And trust—I really want this one.  I also want a Nintendo Switch 2….

…..OK byeeeeeeee.

Khruangbin on a Wednesday. Justice on a Friday. Both at the SB Bowl. The weather: postcard perfect. And the Knicks… THE KNICKS WON. Honestly? What else do you need? But I’ll give you more anyway.

Let’s talk New Noize.

If Bon Iver’s harmonies ever whispered you out of a nap in a sunroom somewhere in Big Sur, then lavender’s we’re having a barn dance might just be your next favorite thing. It’s raw but not undercooked. Haunting in spots, melodic in others, and full of small, everyday sounds that feel big in the right headphones. Highly recommend.

Also—Stereolab. I know, I know. Everyone’s talking about the new record. Good. They should be. It’s fantastic.

Picking Song of the Week was like choosing between dream snacks at 2am. This past set was overflowing with standout singles: The Armed’s “Well Made Play” is a beast. Greet Death and U.S. Girls dropped undeniable gems. Wednesday is out here making everyone else look lazy. But "7 Months" by Forth Wanderers? That one just hits different. If this is where they’re headed, someone tell Wet Leg to start looking over their shoulder.

Til next time...

We’re a day late but fully justified. I lost my voice and spent most of Saturday in monk mode. Worth it.

Let’s rewind: Thursday night, Jack White played the Santa Barbara Bowl. Man came out swinging — six White Stripes songs including “Ball and Biscuit,”. The set was short though — like 86 minutes short. Started at 8:10, ended by 9:36PM. Bro was in and out before I could even consider spending rent money on a poster. I heard his L.A. sets were two hours? That’s alleged. Haven’t verified. But as always, transparency and accountability live here.

Fast forward to Friday: me + a proper crew road-tripped to Oxnard for Turnstile... at an Elks Lodge. You read that right. There was also a full-blown wrestling match happening at the same time. Peak America. Smoking J’s BBQ had me fighting for my life during “Blackout” — meat sweats in full effect.

Let's talk New Noize specifically the song of the week, which belongs to NxWorries. "Everybody Gets Down" A new single AND a tour announcement? I’ve been waiting literal years to see Anderson .Paak and Knxwledge share a stage again. October calendar just got rearranged.

Album of the week is Earcandy from Miso Extra. This album is a summer essential. A hyper-addictive blend of pop, R&B, and global dance/electronic grooves. It’s playful, fresh, and probably what your serotonin's been asking for.

Don’t sleep on:

  • spill tab – “Assis”

  • M(h)aol – “1 800-Call-Me-Back”

  • Triathalon – “Salt”

  • tUnE-yArDs – “How Big Is the Rainbow”

Upcoming concert schedule includes Khruangbin (maybe twice), Justice on Friday (hopefully), and still no forever plus-one. But honestly, maybe that’s for the best. Adventure. Excitement. A Jedi craves not these things…
