I took a rare Sunday off last week, but I’m back in fine form and trying to stack two weeks of new music into two hours. And what a stack it is.
Started with new Gorillaz "The Happy Dictator". They’ve gone all in on Indian inspiration for this record and, as a Pakistani-American dude, I’m hyped. Followed that with the Song of the Week, Loser by Tame Impala. For some reason it is really hitting a lot of inner strings, wonder why?
Nine Inch Nails are rolling through Thursday/Friday. As of now I’m not going, but that could flip. What won’t change is how wild it feels to hear Trent and Atticus turning in a Disney TRON: Ares soundtrack. Teenage me would’ve never believed it.
Album of the Week goes to Big Thief’s "Double Infinity". Dropped two Fridays ago while I was off, but worth the rewind. It’s a sharp left turn from their “sound” pace, feel, attitude all stretched thin in the best ways. The record makes you question past and future at the same damn time. Uncomfortable, but good uncomfortable. They’re hitting the Hollywood Bowl in October, fingers crossed I’ll be there.
Other standouts you need in your rotation:
Die Spitz "Something to Consume": Been sitting on this record a while. It’s pure fire. I can’t wait until they announce a tour because this band is built for chaos.
Maruja "Pain to Power": First full dive after a few singles and… wow. Still processing, but it’s living up to the anticipation.
Ho99o9 "Immortal": Easily their most alternative work yet. Aggressive as always, but sonically abstract in a way that feels like a plunge into the aphotic zone.
Outside music: yes, I saw Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle. FUCK YEAH, and the hype is real. If I were a Hashira, my breathing style would be playlist breathing. If you know, you know.
Also, shoutout to the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. They’re running an Akira Kurosawa retrospective right now. I’ve already caught three films — full write-up coming next week.
Still looking, always cooking. See you next Sunday.
