So turns out I made it to my 46? IDK how that happened but I am thankful that I made it. Extra shout to all the people that reached out to wish this greying sasquatch a happy born day for just surviving.

New Noize this past weekend was thriving as always. Chalk dropped one of the most musically diverse records of 2026 so far. Crystalpunk is all over the place in the best way possible. You’d think that level of range would create distance, but it’s actually the opposite. There’s a thread running through the chaos that keeps everything cohesive. It’s a wild ride, but it knows exactly where it’s going.

Also worth your time: The Notwist returning with News From Planet Zombie. I saw them almost 20 years ago. At one point they hacked Wii remotes into some kind of theremin adjacent groovebox. Fast forward two decades and they’re still pushing boundaries. This new record feels like both a continuation and a reintroduction to one of the most quietly brilliant bands out there.

Album of the Week goes to my queen Kim Gordon with PLAY ME. This might be her most cohesive solo record yet, and honestly? It might convert people who never quite tapped into her art rock universe. There’s a heavy hip-hop influence here. At times it feels closer to Playboi Carti than Sonic Youth, which is wild to say and somehow completely accurate. Making music is hard. Making relevant music is harder. Doing it at 70, for new audiences, without alienating the old guard? That’s royalty behavior. All hail.

Kacey Musgraves clearly had a camera on my life the last few years because “Dry Spell” felt a little too on the nose. I’m gonna need writing credit, Kacey.

zzzahara is gearing up for a tour and blessed us with “I Can Be Yours” featuring Winter. zzzahara continues to make exclusively rad music.

Earlier this year I was introduced to Chinese American Bear and have been obsessed ever since. You know I am super excited for this upcoming record on Moshi Moshi Records.

And Iceage… my guys… you can’t just drop a track like “Star” and disappear again. It’s been five years. Don’t tease me like that.

of those “cool kids got together and, shocker, made something cool” moments. Smooth, dreamy, alt-rock perfection. Is a new beabadoobee record coming this year? Who knows. Maybe The Marías know. Maybe no one does. Either way, we’ve got this to hold us over.
