The Yum Yum Tree “Turn Down The Noise”
A Tuesday update because I was busy covering for my music director… but also, let’s be real, my own laziness should probably be studied.
Speaking of studying let’s dive into this past Sunday’s New Noize set.
Flea dropped a jazz record where he’s on trumpet, and yeah it’s a full-on groove. While we’re talking jazz checkout “Ouroborosuite” by Collin Sherman—heady, hypnotic, and quietly flexing. Want to go darker? Këkht Aräkh is back doing what he does best cold, raw, and absolutely unbothered. If you want something smaller in scope but just as haunting, Clarion’s latest EP was in a serious battle for Album of the Week.
And speaking of EPs, HEALTH is back again, THE RAT WARS CONTINUES, with the third R-TYPE EP, stacked with remixes that somehow hit just as hard as the originals. Need to move a bit differently? Robyn’s got you with “Sexistential.” Need to be politically fired up but still somehow floating above it all? José González continues to weaponize calm & his latest work is one of the most quietly devastating listens I’ve come across in a minute. And Courtney Barnett? Dropped a gem that somehow nobody is talking about but I’m talking about it.
Can we talk about “Bad & U Know It”? Wax Motif and Ty Dolla $ign cooked up something that has fully burrowed into my brain. I catch myself humming unconsciously. Future Islands are back with “Find Love.” Frozen Soul (feat. Machine Head) with “Invoke War” is exactly what you think it is, BRUTAL. And the new Orange Doors track “Gizmo Gadget”? Don’t sleep.
After all that I went with the new The Claypool Lennon Delirium single “Meat Machines” as the New Noize Song of the week. This is the 2nd single from this insanely talented band and the hype only grows after letting the “Meat Machines” in your life, something the band doesn't recommend. Listen to the song it will make sense
Album of the Week goes to Fcukers whose name I absolutely cannot say correctly on air because of the FCC. “Ö” feels less like a debut and more like a statement: we’re present, we’re loud, and we’re ready to move. It’s a masterclass in controlled fun with form. The White Stripes, Run The Jewels, Sofi Tukker and now Fcukers are firmly in those "killer duo" conversation.
Don’t let the humor and bounce fool you this is layered, intentional, and packed with grooves that bend genres in ways we don’t get nearly enough of. I’ve seen them a few times now; most recently a Halloween DJ set here in SB and even in that format (which can be a gamble), they treated it like a full performance. If you get a chance to see them live, go. Do not wait. Future regret is real.
Spring anime is knocking at the door and I’m still recovering from winter.
Jujutsu Kaisen? Peak. The Culling Game arc is setting a new standard. Picking up from Shibuya with insane fight choreography and one of the best soundtracks of the year. MF Ghost kept drifting deeper into my heart. Hell’s Paradise went full throttle against the Tensen, delivering episodes that just drained the imagination in the best way. Fire Force is finishing things up so Soul Eater can start.
And then out of nowhere “Sentenced to Be a Hero.” Flips the whole power fantasy/immortality trope on its head, with an art style that’s putting Studio Kai on the map.
Spring’s about to get wild too. From the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist comes Daemon of the Shadow Realm. Dorohedoro Season 2 continues building one of the strangest worlds that somehow feels way too real. JoJo fans rejoice!!!! Finally got Steel Ball Run (Episode 2 is a different situation). Ghost in the Shell is back. Re:Zero Season 4 is on deck. Wand and Sword Season 2. And a new Fist of the North Star remake?
No guarantees any of this hits but expectations are high. And with new anime comes new music. Winter 2026 already gave us one of the best soundtracks of the year with JJK Culling Game Part 1, so yeah… the bar is stupid high already.
Anyone going to be in LA this Saturday? I will be going to Hollywood High as Mitski is currently playing residency. I’ve been talking (annoyigly) about this for a minute and now it’s here! If you’re around, hit me. Let’s link before the set.
OH and late-night eats after are 100% happening. You’ve been warned.
