Im back bitches! If you’ve been paying attention, you probably noticed I was MIA last Sunday. That’s 'cause I was out vibing at Father John Misty’s show up in San Luis Obispo at the Fremont. Spoiler alert: the man absolutely crushed it. So, let’s do a quick recap of my recent show marathon:
Oct 4 – JUSTICE w/ THUNDERCAT @ Hollywood Bowl:
This was easily one of the top three Hollywood Bowl shows of 2024, no question. Thundercat kicked off the night like a boss, and then out of nowhere—Big Sean shows up! What even is life? And JUSTICE? They didn’t just play; they came to dominate. Best production of the year so far, hands down. Felt like I stepped into a rave from the 90s. Hit up the after-party with FlyLo, which was a vibe, but, trust me, I was dragging my feet through LA by the end of that night.
Sept 29 – Father John Misty @ Fremont Theater:
I haven’t seen Josh Tillman do his club show thing in years, and it was awesome to catch him in a more intimate setting. He hit us with some new tracks, classics, and, of course, those trademark dance moves. He’s got a new album coming next month and I’m hyped.
Sept 28 – Mitski @ Hollywood Bowl:
Okay, fun fact: Sharon Van Etten was the opener, and I had no idea until I got there. Best surprise of the night. Both Sharon and Mitski brought their A-game, and guess who brought a picnic basket full of food and drinks? This guy. Nothing beats a BYOB show at the Hollywood Bowl. (Pro tip: JUSTICE allowed food but no drinks, so I went all out on the snacks.) Every venue should get on board with this, especially you, SB Bowl—take notes.
Sept 26 – Anderson .Paak @ SB Bowl:
Yes Lawd! It finally happened, and it was glorious. Missed the opener, but showed up just in time for Anderson to do his thing. And man, he did all the things. I thought it was going to be a “Malibu” heavy set, but nah—he hit us with a mix of everything. Dude has more features than I can even keep track of, but you won’t catch me complaining.
Sept 24 – Glass Beams @ The Wiltern:
I didn’t really know what I was walking into, but Glass Beams did not disappoint. How three people can make that much sound is beyond me. Their set left me wanting more, though—their catalog’s a bit on the short side. Fingers crossed we get a full-length album in 2025. I need it.
And tonight? Clairo’s up next, and I’m aiming to get there extra early to catch Alice Phoebe Lou. Never seen her live, but I’m a fan, so I’m paying tribute to the ticket gods as we speak. Fingers crossed I snag one before the doors.
Now, for the main event: New Noize. I had to cover the Reggae Soundclash that airs before my show, which means you get a 3-hour playlist clocking in at... 2 hours and 3 minutes. Don’t ask how that works, but trust me—it does.
New Noize Album of the Week?
The Smile’s Cutouts. I’m throwing all my weight behind this side project and voting for its permanent status. There’s this youthful energy wrapped up in the whole thing, but it’s self-aware enough to know what it’s doing. Easily one of the standout records of 2024.
New Noize Song of the Week?
The Dan Da Dan opening by Creepy Nuts. These dudes are now 2-for-2 on anime bangers. And while we’re on the topic, Dan Da Dan is gunning for my #1 anime of the year spot, and we’ve only seen one episode so far. It’s giving me major FLCL vibes, and I’m here for it.
My calendar is jam-packed with shows and madness until Thanksgiving. Will I survive? Tune in next week to find out.
